The first time that my father almost died, I came away from my time at his bedside with one huge wish, that I would live. It was the fleetingness of life that impressed me most during that time. How quickly this life will be over! I also felt a huge love for my father, and for myself, and for this life that was slipping away like sand going down an hourglass.

There came up from inside me such a strong feeling that I was still alive, my body was still strong, unlike my beloved father’s. It was time to wake up. I wanted to live. And in wanting to live, I wanted to dance.

Dance, of all things? Really? That was curious. I was surprised that it was dancing that came up so strongly for me. I had loved dancing as a child, and up until my mid 20s had danced regularly. And then it stopped. I hadn’t even really thought about it. It was just gone.

But the message was so urgent. I had to dance if I wanted to really be alive. I decided to trust that this voice had wisdom and I started to dance. First awkwardly at dance classes, then more and more freely and rhythmically at all kinds of workshops and conscious dance groups. I dance most days in the house too, one or two or three good tunes, disco, African beats, French rap, R&B, Latin, you name it. Last year when I attended a meditation retreat, I was happily surprised that we danced between meditations. Not only were the meditations great, but we were DANCING! All right!

Dance is back in my life, baby.

It’s not even that I’ve ever been a great dancer. I just love it. When I dance I am free. I am happy. I am connected. I am filled with energy and passion for my life. I am me.
